SONOMA IN THE CITY

The owners of this city property wanted outdoor space for relaxing and entertaining. When they acquired part of an adjacent lot, they increased the width of their lot by 10 feet. Their vision was to transform their home to promote the al fresco lifestyle of California wine country, where they have roots.

 

The design reshapes their outdoor space into four zones at varying elevations: kitchen/dining, spa terrace, TV lounge, and side yard. This multilevel design defines each zone while mitigating the height differential between the first level and the ground plane. A new glass door system integrates interior and exterior spaces.

 

The south-facing outdoor zones are flooded with natural light. Plantings, louvered sun shades, and a pergola were designed to filter sunlight, add interest, and maintain privacy. Durable materials were specified for a modern aesthetic: Brazilian Ipe, black steel, and large-format porcelain tiles. A focal point is a 7-ft linear fireplace with steel surround and an artful array of cascading planter boxes.

 

Layers of light add depth and interest in the evening. LED lighting is integrated under stairs, handrails, and above the outdoor kitchen for safety and aesthetics. Concealed lights illuminate the plantings while overhead string lights evoke a celebratory vibe.
