Lakeshore Condo Renovation
This condominium is located in a mid-century high-rise on Lake Shore Drive. The space had not been updated and needed a total renovation. Program requirements included open-plan living, contemporary kitchen, two bedrooms and media room.
In the new design, the kitchen, dining, living and media rooms flow together, connected via a sunken living room accessed by wrap-around steps. A window wall floods the home with sunlight and overlooks Lake Michigan. Original oak herringbone flooring was restored and extended through the home to unify the space. A unique element was the use of walnut sourced from a supplier to Bentley Motors. A floor-to-ceiling wall of kitchen cabinets bookmatches the walnut veneer—the custom dining credenza and floating powder room vanity continue the use of walnut. The media room doubles as a home office and features floating wood shelving with integrated lighting and a custom desk with knife-edge pencil drawers. Extensive use of single-source walnut detailing unifies the home and adds warmth to the mid-century modern design.
The kitchen has custom white lacquer cabinets and a slab marble feature wall. Stepped ceiling details define the space and conceal existing mechanicals and a hood over the cooktop. Lighting is integrated into ceiling planes, including a light slot over the floating breakfast bar and a knife-edge light cove between kitchen and dining area.
